[ Vieta G-100 turntable ]

The Vieta Ocnoson G-100 is a turntable made in Spain by the electronic company Industrias Cosmos but labelled Vieta (by the way, Vieta no longer exist as an audio company. The Vieta trademark is now owned by an audio distributor in Spain who uses the name to build low quality audio products. The same happened to Garrard until Loricraft Audio rescued the name to build really hi-fi). In the sixties, seventies and eighties Vieta was the number one in spanish audio panorama. They built excelent components, specially loudspeakers, and almost everybody involved with audio in Spain has owned something made by Vieta.

The G-100 is a belt driven TT. The belt acts on a sub-platter. On this sub-platter there's the aluminium platter with an stroboscope ring that allows mechanical speed control. The G-100 is equipped with two speeds and may be operated in manual or semi-automatic mode. Thethin tonearm is made from aluminium and it's quite simple to calibrate. The G-100 is what be can call o mid-fi 70's TT. It is very easy to find this TT in Spain almost everywhere: second hand shops are selling this unit for almost nothing. With some upgrading the G-100 could sound very well.

I did some of these modifications on my unit. This was my first TT restoration and was something like a training experience in order to learn how to do it. The knowledge adquired was used to restore a really stunning device like the Thorens TD124. The modifications are easy to do. The arm could not be changed except if you want to drill metal and want to pay more money only for the arm than for the whole TT. The upgrades that I did was: new phono cable, new plinth, extra damping treatment (sorbothane and blu-tack) and new cartridge. I found a new Shure M100HE for a few bucks so I'm using it to play records.

Here you have some pics of the G-100 after all the modification. Now It looks great and sounds quite well.
